20 Time Blog - Week 8

Hey everyone! It is now my eighth week posting a blog about my 20% Time Project. This means we have less than two months left! Unfortunately, we did not accomplish much this week, which has left us falling a little behind the schedule we created. We did not get a chance to meet up and get the bins ready to distribute throughout the district. We also ran into another problem regarding the approval for our mural. We got the paperwork that we need to fill out, but it is asking for the size of the mural, which we won't know until we are finished collecting caps. We were also asked to turn in the paperwork with a design for the mural, which we have yet to decide on. However, the bottle cap collection is continuing to grow as I was given more caps than usual this week from friends. Hopefully we will be able to get the bins ready and the paperwork finished, and get back on track to successfully complete this project.

There are a lot of different things that I hope to learn from this project. I expect to learn about different ways that we as a society can improve the environment before it is too late. I also want to learn how the levels of pollution have increased over the years and how it has impacted the world around us. In addition to this knowledge, I hope to improve some skills that are crucial in the world today, including time management, communication, and collaboration.

In my fourth blog post, I stated that there were three questions driving my research throughout this project. With some revisions, these questions are:

  1. Who do we need to talk to and what skills do we need in order to be able to build this mural?

  2. What impacts does the increasing pollution level have on the world around us?

  3. How does recycling make a difference in the community and what else can we do to solve growing pollution problems?

We have been using the first question for a long time now when it came to things like choosing a mentor, contacting the administrators from multiple schools, and getting the paperwork required to approve the mural. The answers to the second question are what have motivated us to do this project in the first place. We are hoping to be able to inspire people to make similar choices toward improving the environment, which is where the third question comes into play. All three of these questions continue to drive this project as a whole. I am still feeling confident that we will be able to make this a success in the end.
